Mikati’s Resignation: The End of Dissociation

While everyone will now be busying themselves with analyses and anecdotes about the domestic aspects of the crisis, the consequences of Mikati’s resignation for the tragedy in Syria are no less serious. (Photo: Haytham Moussawi)

There are many details, and a lot has happened over the past few days. From Prime Minister Najib Mikati and Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri’s trip to Rome, to President Michel Suleiman becoming persuaded that the domestic political set-up needs changing, to the contacts made in connection with the two cabinet sessions convened in the past couple of days.

What is clear is that Mikati’s resignation was essentially part of the crisis in Syria.

Regarding the domestic issues that prompted the move, which are inextricable from developments in Syria, a number of things can be noted.

One is the growing hold of the US and certain European and Arab governments over a great many Lebanese politicians, including Suleiman, Mikati, and Walid Jumblatt.

These countries wanted to block the adoption of a new election law that would deny the March 14 coalition a parliamentary majority and jeopardize the “balance-tipping” power of Jumblatt. So they went into action to ensure that no agreement would be reached on legislation that does not suit their strategy. Even the confused position of the Phalangists and Lebanese Forces was insufficient to enable the Orthodox Gathering Law to be approved.

Given Suleiman, Mikati, and Jumblatt’s insistence on involving Berri in the ploy to thwart the Orthodox Law, the speaker may have erred by not referring it to parliament earlier, rather than allowing the trio to mount their pre-emptive strike aimed at keeping the 1960 election law in place.

The trio assumed that pressure from the president and prime minister would suffice to achieve this goal. Their aides insist they had they cooperation of the speaker -- why else would he have agreed not to convene parliament to debate the Orthodox Gathering law? But it did not cross their minds that the people who matter would be unwilling to submit to blackmail once again.

The other directive that was issued relates to the security situation in the country.

For the West and its Arab clients, it is not enough to neutralize the Lebanese army, prevent it from acting decisively to bring the security breakdown under control, and threaten to split or scrap it. They also want direct control over the Internal Security Forces (ISF), so decided there is a pressing need for General Ashraf Rifi to be kept in his post as ISF head following the assassination of Wissam al-Hassan.

No opportunity was missed to press this point, whether in repeated remarks by the US ambassador to Lebanon, or in the Saudi ambassador’s claim to have been given an undertaking by the president of the republic that Rifi’s term would be extended. The French prime minister even raised the subject with Mikati, telling him within earshot of accompanying ministers that “President Hollande recommends” that Rifi be retained.

But the trio were unsure they could get that done. When Mikati failed to secure a direct promise from Berri, he sought at least to obtain one from Hezbollah and the Free Patriotic Movement (FPM). The big surprise was when Hezbollah’s reply, delivered to the prime minister minutes ahead of the resignation announcement, was “do what you deem appropriate.”

While everyone will now be busying themselves with analyses and anecdotes about the domestic aspects of the crisis, the consequences of Mikati’s resignation for the tragedy in Syria are no less serious. In this context, it would help to note the following:

– The sharp escalation of political and military pressure on the Syrian regime by its Arab and Western detractors. They have acted to foil any efforts by opposition figures to pursue a political settlement, such as by sidelining Moaz al-Khatib. This while running a massive scheme to arm and train thousands of fighters inside Syria, Turkey, and Jordan, ahead of what the Turks have been saying will be a decisive showdown in three months.

– The real results of US President Barack Obama’s visit to Palestine and Jordan. While urging the Palestinian president to keep praying, he was firm with the king of Jordan about the need to fall fully in line with the anti-Assad camp. More importantly, Obama obliged Israel’s leaders to keep quiet, refrain from action against either Iran, Syria, or Hezbollah.

– The American, European, and Gulf mobilization against Hezbollah, which has taken several forms: reactivating the issue of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL); putting pressure on the EU to designate Hezbollah as a terrorist organization; directly pressing the prime minister to do what is necessary to weaken Hezbollah’s influence in the government; and contriving a new controversy called “Hezbollah’s role in Syria.”

In light of the above, some worrying conclusions can be drawn:

– The slogan of dissociation from the Syrian crisis, even if it was never fully realistic, is being finally abandoned. The resignation of the government means involving Lebanon directly. In parallel, more pressure will be exerted on the army to prevent it from taking preventive measures, while the ISF will likely head toward disintegration, rendering it ineffective.

– The architects of this move are betting that change in Syria is inevitable and will come soon. One security veteran says it amazes him how time after time, world capitals behave as though the end of the war in Syria and the downfall of the regime are imminent. This wager requires waves of tension to be unleashed in Lebanon, in the belief that this will unsettle Hezbollah and prevent it from aiding the regime in Syria.

– The political chaos will be protracted, the elections are as good as postponed, and the political tilt of Suleiman-Mikati-Jumblatt will revive the fortunes of the March 14 camp. Some of its leaders made calls yesterday evening to arrange their affairs in anticipation of new ministerial and security posts.

God protect us.

Obama Talks “Peace” in Israel while Preparing War

Global Research, March 22, 2013

In a speech delivered in Jerusalem on Thursday, US President Barack Obama identified US interests unconditionally with Israel while reiterating war threats against both Syria and Iran.

The speech, delivered to several hundred Israeli university students, was ostensibly meant to signal Washington’s continued support for the so-called “peace process”—the moribund, decades-old diplomatic charade that has served as a cover for Israeli oppression of the Palestinian people and a means of promoting US objectives elsewhere in the Arab world.

The US administration chose this audience rather than the Knesset for fear that Obama would be heckled by the extreme right-wing Zionist elements that dominate the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Before appearing in Jerusalem, Obama made a brief side-trip by helicopter to Ramallah in the occupied West Bank, where he appeared at a press conference with Palestinian Authority (PA) chief Mahmoud Abbas.

Several hundred demonstrators took to the streets of Ramallah to denounce the visit, but were kept far from Abbas’ compound by a phalanx of PA police. Confronting the police, demonstrators began chants against Abbas, shouting “down with the military regime.”
While mouthing empty platitudes about the accelerating spread of Zionist settlements in the occupied West Bank not being “constructive,” Obama made no repeat of his 2009 demand for a freeze on settlement activity. Instead, he pressured the Palestinian Authority and Abbas to drop their own demand for such a freeze.

Obama argued that politics in Israel “are complex” and that the settlements were “not an issue that’s going to be solved immediately.” He chided the Palestinians for holding the view “that we can only have direct negotiations when everything is settled ahead of time, then there’s no point for negotiations.”

In reality, the so-called “two-state solution” has become a dead letter, as Zionist settlements have already gobbled up nearly half of the land occupied by Israel in the 1967 war, which was supposedly to be the territory of a Palestinian mini-state. There are now 560,000 Israelis in this territory, 60,000 more than when Obama took office.

The New York Times reported Thursday on a document summing up Palestinian Authority “talking points” for the meeting with Obama that suggested Abbas and the corrupt wealthy clique he represents are prepared to bow even lower to the US and Israel.

The documents propose an agreement in which Netanyahu could “pledge to you secretly that he will stop settlement activities during the period of negotiations.”

Both the Israeli press and Palestinian analysts described Obama’s address to the Israeli students as the most enthusiastic embrace of the ideology of Zionism by any president in US history. One Israeli newspaper urged Obama to emigrate to Israel and run for office.

Obama first stressed Israel’s unconditional right to security—though no such security is on offer to the Palestinians of the West Bank or Gaza or neighboring countries like Lebanon, which have been subjected to repeated Israeli invasions and bombardments. Unlike these countries, Israel serves as a bulwark for US counter-revolutionary and neo-colonial operations in the region.

“The security relationship between the United States and Israel has never been stronger: more exercises between our militaries, and more exchanges among our political, military and intelligence officials than ever before; the largest program to date to help you retain your qualitative military edge,” Obama boasted. He announced that discussions were underway to extend for another decade the US military aid program that pours billions of dollars into the Israel Defense Forces every year.
Obama repeated a threat of military action against Syria made the day before during a joint appearance with Netanyahu.

“We will not tolerate the use of chemical weapons against the Syrian people or the transfer of these weapons to terrorists,” he said. “The world is watching, and we will hold you accountable.”
The overwhelming evidence indicates that a chemical weapon used on Tuesday, killing at least 30 Syrians in a government-controlled area near Aleppo, was indeed the work of “terrorists” —those that the US and its allies are backing in the war for regime change. The US president was not referring to these Al Qaeda-linked forces, however, but rather to the mass Shia political movement, Hezbollah, which has been a dominant force in the Lebanese government. He demanded that all foreign governments join Washington in branding it as a “terrorist organization.”

Obama repeated even more forcefully his threats against Iran and its nuclear program, claiming that while Washington would seek to bring about Tehran’s submission by diplomatic means, “time is not unlimited.”

“I have said to the world that all options are on the table for achieving our objectives,” he added. “America will do what we must to prevent a nuclear-armed Iran.”

Much of the rest of the speech appealed for the revival of the “peace process” and the “two-state solution.” Obama insisted that as part of any settlement, the Palestinians would have to recognize Israel as a “Jewish state,” a definition that would consolidate the apartheid-style disenfranchisement of non-Jews, including a large Palestinian population, inside Israel and abrogate any right of Palestinian refugees to return.

While the media praised this peace rhetoric as “bold” and “courageous,” the right-wing Zionist politicians of Netanyahu’s government brushed aside the US president’s remarks.

Netanyahu thanked Obama for the speech and his “unqualified support of Israel.” His new economy and trade Minister, Naftali Bennett, expressed reservations about Obama’s reference to Israeli occupation of the West Bank, however, declaring: “A nation cannot be an occupier in its own land.”
Danny Ayalon, the right-wing nationalist former deputy foreign minister said the speech was “no problem” as it contained no specific proposals for the so-called peace talks.

Meanwhile, the Jerusalem Post suggested that the talk of reviving the “peace process” was mere window dressing for the main aim of Obama’s trip, ratcheting up the war threat against Iran.
“Speculation has been rife for years that the US is holding Israel back when it comes to Iran,” the newspaper noted. “Indeed, prior to Obama’s trip there was speculation that one of the main purposes of his journey was to hold a bright red stop light up to Netanyahu.”

It continued: “Publicly, however, restraining Israel has not been Obama’s message. Indeed, the opposite is true – and these are the words the Iranians are hearing as well.”

At Wednesday’s joint press conference, Obama recognized Israel’s unilateral “right” to attack Iran. “Each country has to make its own decisions when it comes to the awesome decision to engage in any kind of military action, and Israel is differently situated than the United States,” he said.

“Obama hopes it will not come to that on Iran, he hopes the Iranians will back down,” the Jerusalem Post commented. “But if they don’t, the credible military threat Netanyahu wants to see waved along with the economic, political and diplomatic pressure already being applied against Iran is no less than Israel itself. Iran, and the international community, have been warned.”

Ten years after invading Iraq, US imperialism is laying the groundwork for a war against Iran, which has three times both the land mass and population of Iraq. The motives are the same: control of one of the world’s most geo-strategically vital and energy-rich regions.

Any Israeli attack on Iran would draw in the US in short order. With his public endorsement of Israel’s “right” to launch such an attack, Obama has set in motion forces that are driving toward a conflagration.

Israel opens fire on Gaza fishermen

Published Saturday, March 23, 2013

Israeli forces opened fire on fishermen off Gaza's coast Saturday, two days after the Jewish state announced that it limited Palestinian sea travel in a move widely regarded as collective punishment.
Israel's army announced Thursday that the fishing zone for Palestinians in Gaza would be reduced from six to three miles following a rocket attack launched earlier this week by a marginal Salafi group.

Fishermen in Gaza told Ma'an News Agency that Israel's navy opened fire at them on Saturday to prevent them from going out further than three miles.

Mahfouth Kabariti, head of a federation for fishermen and water sports, confirmed that the Israeli navy had set up new signs defining the permitted fishing zone.

The zone had been extended to six miles as part of an Egyptian-brokered ceasefire that ended Israel’s eight-day assault on Gaza in November that killed 177 Palestinians and six Israelis.

Hamas complained to Egypt on Friday after Israel suspended part of a Cairo-brokered truce agreement. An Egyptian official confirmed that the Hamas complaint had been received, saying Israel had complained separately about the rocket attack.

The official said Cairo would contact both sides to "restore their commitment to the truce."
Aknaf Bayt al-Maqdis, a hardline Salafi faction with a small presence in Gaza and the neighboring Egyptian Sinai claimed responsibility for the salvo on Sderot.

Israeli Human Rights Centre Objects to Detaining Palestinian Children

snapSnap shot from a video by an international activist during the arrest

PNN

An Israeli human rights centre has revealed that the occupation authorities have ten Palestinian children in jail who are aged between 8 and 10 years. The Israeli Information Center for Human Rights in the Occupied Territories (B'Tselem) made the disclosure in the context of the recent spate of arrest of minors in the West Bank.

B'Tselem said that its envoy met the occupation's legal advisor in the occupied West Bank, Colonel Doron Ben Barak and asked for him to intervene as a matter of urgency to get the release of more than 20 Palestinian children detained on Wednesday morning in Hebron.
The organisation has published a video taken by an activist that shows children being pulled from the arms of their parents while crying and screaming. The children were on their way to a number of schools on Tariq bin-Ziad Street in Hebron when they were detained by the Israeli authorities. The B'Tselem video shows clearly that they were carrying their school bags and wearing school uniforms at the time of their detention.

Although a spokesman of the Israeli occupations forces said that the pupils were interrogated on suspicion of throwing stones and Molotov cocktails, B'Tselem said that "this cannot justify the mass detention of youths for unspecified suspicions, let alone the arrest or detention of children under twelve".

The Israeli Youth Law requires that a parent or adult be present during the interrogation of child suspects. The law does not formally apply to Palestinians in the occupied territories, who are subject to Israeli military law, but the military court has recommended that the relevant provisions be taken into account in all dealings with Palestinian children.

The Israel Defense Forces confirmed in a statement to the Tel Aviv newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth. Most were later released, the military press office said, but seven of the young people “have been taken for a police interrogation.”

Israeli forces detain around 7,000 Palestinian minors every year. Some of them are kidnapped from their homes, some while they are on the street and some are taken from their schools. According to statistics by the Palestinian Prisoner Support and Human Rights Association, Addameer, at the end of 2012 there were 194 Palestinian minors were in Israeli prisons; at least 30 of them are under 16 years of age

CIA Providing Rebels with Intelligence on Syrian Forces: WSJ

The Central Intelligence Agency is expanding its role in the campaign against the Syrian government by feeding intelligence to select rebel fighters to use against government forces, The Wall Street Journal reported Saturday.
Extremists
The move is part of a U.S. effort to stem the rise of Islamist extremists in Syria by aiding secular forces, amid fears that the fall of President Bashar al-Assad would enable al Qaeda to flourish in Syria, the paper quoted current and former U.S. officials as saying.
The CIA has sent officers to Turkey to help vet rebels who receive arms shipments from Gulf allies, but administration officials cited concerns about some weapons going to Islamists, the paper said.

In Iraq, the CIA has been directed by the White House to work with elite counter-terrorism units to help the Iraqis counter the flow of al-Qaida-linked fighters across the border with Syria, The WSJ added.

According to the report, the West favors fighters aligned with the Free Syrian Army, which supports the Syrian Opposition Coalition political group.

Syrian opposition commanders said the CIA had been working with British, French and Jordanian intelligence services to train rebels in the use of various kinds of weapons, the paper said. The move comes as the al-Nusra Front, the main al-Qaida-linked group operating in Syria, is deepening its ties to the terrorist organization's central leadership in Pakistan, it indicated.

Jonathan Pollard has been fed well

The time has come to finally wrap up the Jonathan Pollard affair. I agree with former Israeli education minister Amnon Rubinstein that, “It is not humane to keep him in jail any longer.” The Israelis plan to put the hunger squeeze on Obama during his trip.

I agree. It is not humane to the American people to keep Pollard in jail. He should be executed for his high treason, one so horrendous that most of the damage is still classified.
But if he was released I suspect it would be leaked to expose to the American people the full story of his treason which would have killed millions of Americans.
Pollard does deserve to be released…not out into freedom which he does not deserve, but to the infernal regions, which he does. And for all those eminent Israelis who plan to go on a hunger strike during the President’s trip, I would like to air ship bottled water to them with the caveat that they guarantee they will carry their hunger strike out all the way to the end or I get my money back.
As for ex-CIA director James Woolsey, who knows about the classified file, and former secretaries of State George Shultz and Henry Kissinger who support the Pollard release I have nothing but utter contempt. They have also betrayed the American people, and cheaply so. They stain their generation with shame, but maybe that is not such a bad thing when it comes to Israel because this all happened under their watch.

CIA Director Woolsey – Hillary Clinton – Shame on Them
Here is what is being held back in the classified files on Pollard. The claims that Pollard was just giving Israeli material on Arab countries, with the inference that the U.S. should have been supplying this to Israeli anyway was just the cover story.

The Israelis at the time, enjoying their ‘special relationship’ with American, were spying for the Soviets. They were tasked with providing them first strike intelligence against the United States.
That’s right folks, a nuclear first strike. Our wonderful Israeli friends had hooked up with the Commies to do America in.

The Soviets knew that the Israelis did not have as many of our counter intelligence assets assigned to watching them as did the Soviets. And if there was a problem and Pollard got burned, the Israelis would provide cover for the Soviets, which is exactly what happened.

Let’s stop for a minute to make sure you understand clearly what being tasked to get first strike intelligence meant. Do you think that the Soviets might have wanted it to use at some point in the future if a bad situation arose, a kind of an ace in the hole they could pull out? That would be dead wrong.

First strike information would have a limited lifespan as codes get changed over time and the mission which obtained it might be compromised in a way that the thieves might not be aware of immediately. The only reason to go after the information is because you plan to use. But the key to that is being reasonably assured that the ‘mutual destruction’ retaliation could be defeated.
We are talking about the end of America here folks. That was the game in play and the Israelis obviously had a piece of the action. Somehow they assumed there would be enough of world left to make it worth the risk. Gosh, do you think the Israelis would have wanted control over all the Mid East as their cut on the deal?

B-52 Bone Yard
Pollard was able to give them the naval submarine codes and the ability to defeat our land based missiles. Then only deterrence that we would still have had secure control over were our nuclear bombers, which of course would have been targeted in the first strike.

Are you getting the picture now why the FBI and CIA top echelons threatened Bill Clinton with mass resignations when he was within a hair of letting Pollard go to buy himself some extra retirement benefits from you know who? But they also had another reason.

Pollard had also turned over to the Israelis our entire East European agents and assets network lists that represented a generation of intelligence work to build up. Around 1100 of these people were arrested, tortured, and many of them executed. This was the intelligence failure of all human history, which no American government could admit to for the incompetence that it showed.
And what was that you ask? It was very simple actually. Designed into the system was not having nearly enough manpower and budgeting to be monitoring the finances of all those working in highly sensitive positions. Our system at the time would only trigger such a close look AFTER suspicious activity had been reported. It was not an integral routine security procedure.

Many of the major domestic spy scandals we have had showed that most of them could have been picked up and stopped with nothing more sophisticated than reviewing expenditures far in excess of the particular spy’s income.

An Israeli Pollard Supporter
Jonathan Pollard was just one case. He was not discovered until a coworker made a suspicion report. A spy camera in his office was used to nail him but his financial records showed the whole story.
Even after Pollard this not routinely checking people’s finances security hole remained opened for others to use.

I will let you consider for yourselves whether that was an oversight, or whether we had been penetrated at a level where someone wanted that vulnerability to remain open, as it had for Pollard.
You might be asking why the Israelis cared so much about this one man to risk constantly embarrassing American presidents and our intelligence services for his release. His handler at the Israeli embassy said later that if he had been there when Pollard came in he would have just put two bullets in his head and sent him downstairs for the acid bath treatment.
They don’t care about Pollard really. They care about all the current spies they have working for them in America to visibly see that if they get caught that Israel has promised to never stop doing all that it can to get them released. They even gave Pollard’s wife a million dollars when she moved to Israel as an example.
The Zios also show they are not afraid to put some of their prime ‘assets’ on display, the likes of Woolsey, Schultz, Kissinger, and even Hillary Clinton has signed on for Pollard’s release. And those in Congress who would support it are too numerous to count. The loyal security community is just sickened by all this.

What this does is display Israel’s power in America to demoralize mid level government workers they are trying to compromise. If they resist, the Zios chastise them for being naive dummies and point to all the well heeled top officials they have on the string. They even brag about being able to get promotions for those who play ball with them, and punish those who don’t, the carrot and stick close.

Abe ‘da Fox’ Foxman
One example of this is the ADL, Foxman’s Anti-Defamation League, long suspected by the American Intel community of being an asset for Israeli intelligence. The ADL has been lecturing at the FBI training academy for many years about domestic threat groups, which exclude them by the way.

In effect this puts the Good Housekeeping seal of approval on them and makes it very easy for the ADL to approach young FBI agents later to ‘help the out’ now and then because ‘we are on the same side.’

One of their hooks is their well known career assistance post retirement from the government, a differed compensation spy payment plan that even senior military officers and Congresscritters have partaken.
But we aren’t on the same side with the Zios. Israel is a major national security risk to all Americans. And so are all the American traitors who aid and abet their intelligence and subversion activities here which include, but are not limited to, espionage involving our military, weapons development, political subversion, academic, and media.
Jonathan Pollard and Israel offered our corpses on a silver platter to the Soviet Communists. If I could press a button I would put all the Israelis in the camps for 65 years, let the Palestinians take over all of their homes, and then subject the Israelis to what they have dished out to their victims…arrests, torture, and poverty. I have my own peace plan for the Mid East. Do onto Israel what Israel has done unto others.

But since I lost my button, let us start with sanctions, across the board. And let us work toward any politician who promises undying support for Israel, to be treated as a traitor to his oath of office. For the sake of our children and grand children we must pry the devil’s fingers from our throats.
We must make common bond with all the victims of militant Zionism and their traitorous allies everywhere they can be found. George Bush said we would hunt down all those who have attacked America wherever they are. It’s the only thing I ever agreed with him on. We have the Israelis permission. They are already doing it to us and they don’t aim to stop…until we stop them.

Egypt Police Guard Brotherhood after Overnight Clashes

Police were out in force on Saturday outside the headquarters of Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood a day after more than 160 people were hurt in running street battles between Islamists and opposition protesters.clashes

An AFP journalist reported a heavy police presence at the building in the Mokattam neighborhood, and the official MENA news agency cited a health ministry spokesman as saying more than 160 people were injured the night before.

Businesses in the area remained closed, and debris from the violence was visible everywhere. "We have already cleared away four burnt buses and three cars," Nasser Abdullah, an official charged with the clean-up, told AFP.

Hundreds of Brotherhood members, many of whom had been bussed in the previous day ahead of the opposition protest, were leaving the complex on Saturday.

Friday's violence broke out after opposition activists marched to the building guarded by police and Brotherhood members. The two sides pelted each other with stones, emergency services chief Mohammed Soltan told MENA. Shots were also heard, but there were no immediate reports of gunshot casualties.

Police used tear gas against the protesters before the clashes spilled over elsewhere in the normally calm Cairo neighborhood.
