Iran Test-fires Ballistic Missile Able to Hit "Israel"

Iran on Tuesday test-fired in its central desert a ballistic missile capable of striking "Israel" as part of military designed to show its ability to retaliate if attacked.

Iran's Revolutionary Guard fired the medium-range Shahab-3 missile at a mock target in the Kavir Desert on the second day of its "Great Prophet 7" exercise, which is due to end on Wednesday,.

The Shahab-3 has a range of up to 2,000 kilometers (1,200 miles), which means it is able to hit "Israel".
Iranian news agencies reported that "the two short-range missiles, the Shahab-1 and Shahab-2, with ranges of 300 to 500 kilometres, were also launched."

Moreover, dozens of short-, medium-, and long-range missiles have been fired from different parts of Iran at a single target in Kavir. The last day of the drill would reportedly see Revolutionary Guard bomber drones also used.

The Islamic republic has test-fired its Shahab missiles before, and frequently holds military drills. Meanwhile, it announced that the military drills are aimed at sending a message to "Israel" and the United States to think twice on their threats of possibly attacking Iran.
In this context, the Lieutenant Commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Brigadier General Hossein Salami said "the missile drills currently underway in different parts of the country are Tehran's firm response to enemies' war rhetoric. "
"These drills mainly aim to show the Iranian nation's ability in defending its vital values," Salami stressed.

The "Great Prophet 7" exercise targeted a replica military base set up in a desert and made to look like a foreign facility, similar to those the United States has in neighboring countries such as Afghanistan.

The launch of the Shahab-3 missile coincided with the day official experts from Iran and world powers were to hold talks in Istanbul to discuss Tehran's nuclear program.

Iran has announced three days of military exercises aimed at spotlighting the Islamic republic's strength in the face of increasing Western pressure and escalated US-"Israeli" threats.

Officials said the drills, beginning on July 1 in Iran's central desert, will include exercises with surface-to-surface missiles, some of which have sufficient range to reach "Israel" and southern Europe.

"Various long, medium and short-range missiles will target simulations of the trans regional forces' airbases" in the northern Semnan desert," Commander of Iran's IRGC Aerospace Division Brigadier General Amir-Ali Hajizadeh said on Sunday.

The Revolutionary Guards said the maneuvers will demonstrate that Iran is capable of mounting a crushing response to any hostile act from other nations.

According to news agencies, the drill is aimed at testing Iran's surface-to-surface missile achievements. In recent years, Iran has made great achievements in the defense sector and gained self-sufficiency in essential military hardware and defense systems.

The exercises are being launched one day after a European Union embargo on Iranian oil imports went into effect.
