  • Military Intervention Might Lead to World War
  • PM Miqati Concerned over Sunni Leadership
  • Stance against STL Strength Not Weakness
  • Israel Remains Main Suspect in Hariri Murder
Imam of Al-Quds Mosque in Sidon Sheikh Maher Hammoud confirmed that the so-called Special Tribunal for Lebanon was nothing but a conspiracy targeting the Resistance in Lebanon, and stressed the necessity to annul this politicized tribunal. He said that the Israeli enemy remains the main suspect in the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri despite all rumors and claims.
In an exclusive interview with Al-Manar Website, Sheikh Hammoud admitted that the main obstacle preventing the deletion of this tribunal was the stance of Prime Minister Najib Miqati who took a “centrist” position towards the tribunal. While wondering whether this tribunal became part of the Sunni doctrine, Sheikh Hammoud expressed belief that a stance by PM Miqati against the tribunal would be a strength for him in the long term instead of being a weakness, given that the conspiracy would be uncovered, sooner or later.

His eminence expressed concerns over the latest dangerous developments in Syria, and hailed the speech made by Syria’s Mufti Sheikh Ahmad Badreddin Hassoun, which is fit to be an applicable document. While describing Syria’s incidents as another conspiracy, he urged the Syrian leadership to take swift measures to deal with the situation.

WHO PERMITS KILLING SON INSTEAD OF FATHER?

Sheikh Maher Hammoud told Al-Manar Website that the assassination of Saria Hassoun, the son of Grand Mufti Sheikh Ahmad Badreddin Hassoun, in addition to other assassinations which took place in Syria in the last few days, signal that an opposition group has adopted the path of assassinations. He expressed hope the situation in Syria would not be similar in this regard to the situation in Iraq, Algeria, Afghanistan and Somalia, where assassinations became something ordinary and normal.

Sheikh Hammoud said that Saria Hassoun was not the target, and highlighted that his father must have been the target. He wondered how someone could permit the killing of a son instead of his father. While expressing concerns over the situation, he said the majority of the demonstrators in Syria are really seeking reform, but added that they were mobilized by external sides which have nothing to do with democracy and freedom.

Sheikh Hammoud hailed, meanwhile, the speech made by the Grand Mufti at his son’s funeral and called to turn it to an applicable document. He pointed to the outlines of this speech which included many messages, mainly his call to "the brothers in the Arab world" to visit Syria to how they have been over the past six months the victim of misleading and deceptive media. He also pointed to Sheikh Hammoud’s call President Bashar Assad to issue a general amnesty, even to those who killed his son in the sake for the country and values. His eminence highlighted that the Mufti’s speech also called for dialogue and stressed the necessity to achieve reform.

CONSPIRACY TARGETING SYRIA

Sheikh Hammoud expressed belief that there was a real conspiracy targeting Syria, and that the issue was not limited to mere opposition here and there. “Whether the opposition groups admit it or not, we believe there is a conspiracy targeting Syria due to its position from the Resistance,” his eminence said, as he stressed the necessity to seek the best ways to besiege this conspiracy. “If it was true that protestors were directly shot, then this would mean that the leadership is giving the opposition an argument to use against it,” he warned, and expressed concerns over the possibility that the crisis last too long. “We are all facing a real challenge between the culture of the Resistance at one side and a completely different culture, hiding behind glamorous slogans,” he said.

Asked whether it was possible that the Libyan sample find a way in Syria in light of the attempts by some force to urge a foreign military intervention in Syria, Sheikh Hammoud said that everything was possible in the presence of people who don’t think. He pointed out that the situation in Syria was different than the situation in Libya. He said that a military intervention in Syria might lead to a world war, in which Iran and the Resistance could take part. He said that he personally rules out such option, but cannot guarantee anything.

OPPOSITION WILL NEVER BE CONVINCED…

Commenting on claims that the conspiracy against Syria has reached the “beginning of the end” stage, Sheikh Hammoud said that last week, he used to believe that Syrians have overcome 70 to 80 percent of the conspiracy. He noted that everything changed after the formational of the transitional council, in addition to the series of assassinations. He pointed to the recently formed Syrian National Council, which includes all opposition forces and which is sponsored by the United States. He said that the formation of this council gave some morale to the Syrian opposition and made them believe that they have actually achieved something and put an end to their conflicts.

Asked about what the Syrian leadership should do at the current moment, Sheikh Hammoud called for more frankness with the people. He said swift measures should be adopted by the leadership, and urged parliamentary and presidential elections. He admitted that President Bashar Assad believes that adopting such measures under pressure would not convince the opposition, he said that he personally favors this option, despite his respect to the other points of view.

MIQATI MUST FOUND REAL LEADERSHIP

Internally speaking, Sheikh Hammoud pointed to the local dispute over financing the so-called Special Tribunal for Lebanon. He noted that this tribunal was not only unconstitutional and illegal, but was also a complete conspiracy. He explained that the problem with this tribunal is deeper than a limited constitutional conflict, and pointed to the path of this tribunal which was based on illnesses and weaknesses since the beginning, from false witnesses to politicization and telecommunications data. He said that the STL was a conspiracy in itself, and therefore must be annulled.
Sheikh Hammoud noted that the main obstacle preventing the deletion of this tribunal was Prime Minister Najib Miqati’s commitment to the tribunal and his “centrist” position towards it. While saying that Miqati should have been more courageous and not fear anything, his eminence said that the truth of this tribunal would be uncovered sooner or later. “The conspiracy, called the STL, will be uncovered. At the time, the stance of PM Miqati against the tribunal would be strength for him, not a weakness,” his eminence went on to say.
Sheikh Hammoud said that Miqati must found a real leadership based on facts not illusions, principles not terrorization. He said that whoever claims that this tribunal was part of the Sunni doctrine was simply an ignorant.

ISRAEL REMAINS MAIN SUSPECT

To conclude, Sheikh Hammoud undermined the claims that Israel has no motive to kill former Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri and that there’s no evidence of its involvement in the murder. He said that Israel benefitted a lot from the crime, and regretted that some people still believe it was innocent. “For us, Israel remains the main suspect,” he highlighted.

While pointing that it has been proven that Israel can do a lot in the Lebanese society and that it was able to cause sedition, he noted that such thing was not something new for Jew Zionists, as history speaks a lot of similar stories.
