U.S. Ambassador in Lebanon Maura Connelly reiterated that the new government will be evaluated based on its lineup, policy statement, and the taken measures.

After ending her visit to head of the Free Patriotic Movement General Michel Aoun, Connelly added that “I reiterated our expectations that the new government will continue to respect Lebanon’s international obligations, including those related to the Security Council resolution 1701 and the Special Tribunal for Lebanon.”

The U.S. ambassador further said that she informed General Aoun about her concerns due to Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah’s accusations against the U.S. embassy in Beirut.

“We see these accusations as an attempt to divert attention away from the tension inside Hezbollah,” Connelly stated.

“I also relayed that we expect the Syrian regime to engage in meaningful dialogue with the opposition. We support the Syrian people’s freedom of speech, and we want to see this regime put an end to its suppression to this right.”
