Finance Ministry Scandal: Saniora’s Team Tightens Grip on All Directorates

07/10/2010 Finance Minister Rayya al-Hassan dismissed Acting Accounting Director General Raja’a Sharif and replaced her with Ziad al-Sheikh, who is considered a member of Lebanon First bloc leader MP Fouad Saniora’s team, As-Safir newspaper quoted on Thursday opposition parliamentary source as saying.

The source said that this was a continuation in Saniora and his working team’s scheme to “tighten their grips on all the state’s directorates.”

The sources pointed out that Hassan fired Sharif to “punish her for exposing violations in the ministry”.

“Not only did the finance minister took this measure but also formed a committee of treasury, budget and disbursements officials who are responsible for these violations and thus evade holding responsibility,” the source said.

Al-Akhbar daily reported that Sharif rejected all inducements given to her to join their team which dominates the ministry but she insisted on honoring her duties but was frequently harassed. She was threatened by Hassan’s adviser Nabil Yamout who told her once: “Join us or you’ll lose your job.”
